Hello all my fellow BA enthusiats!!

I just bought a BA as my daily driver.

I'm also a new member.

It's a 1.8 '97 model called the Astina 180se here in South Africa but I'm sure you guys already knew that.

The car has a few niggles but runs great and really always loved the design of this car.

My issue is I have no history on the car and cant hold of any of the previous owners to find out more about the following issue: (hope you can shed some light on this)

Why the car has no Alarm / Immobiliser present.

First question: Did all these cars come with a transponder key? Mine didn't it has regular old school key so I'm wondering if it may of been disabled somehow and if it was disabled would it be permanent or would it be easy to reinstate?

Second is the Immobiliser, I didn't get a clicker for the unit so I have no idea if its just off and waiting for a signal to enable or if it's been disabled.

And the last thing is the the central locking works from inside the car but doesn't enable (as I suspect it should) when I lock the drivers door with the key.

I know absolutely nothing about this subject so please forgive me if my presumptions are way off but my last car was stolen and I want to take as many precautions as possible this time.

Any assistance would be much appreciated as I would like to go to locksmith armed with as much info as possible so I don't get ripped off.

To answer your questions, some of them came without immobilisers (though not many), but most of them came without alarms. Have a look at your ignition barrel - if it's silvery metal, you have no immobiliser from the factory. If it's black and plastic, you have/had an immobiliser. If you're not sure, post a photo and we'll tell you

If the central locking is playing up, the most likely culprit is one of the door actuators, probably the driver's side by the sounds of things. Everything is done by the door actuator, with a really simple relay box in the left footwell (it's green if you're looking for it). Replacing the actuator in the door should fix the problem
