Basically I am gonna be installing a turbo timer once it arrives, i've got a quick question though, basically I think the timer I have bought may not have the handbrake safety feature where if you take off the handbrake the engine shuts off...I have had an idea which should make this work though.

Using a multimeter i've detected that if i put the positive multimeter probe to a constant 12v and the negative one to one of the handbrake wires...I will get a 12v current when the handbrake is on and like 0.06 volts when the handbrake is off...so if i wire my turbo timers ground wire into this it should work when the handbrake is on but cut the engine if the handbrake is taken off?

Anybody confirm if this will work and is safe?

Cheers

Yes, considering i've just invested in a turbo conversion it seems the right idea.

Nah i'm only jokin, am seriously considering it though, I can get a turbo mani, turbo, downpipe, injectors, and a bit more for £250...then cooler and boost pipes for about £150, and a remap or dastek for about £250, then a dumvalve for cheap on ebay. thats most thats needed for a low boost budget build, which could see just over 200bhp in something that weighs like 900kilo should make for good fun, I'm unsure whether to do it though as I can see it becoming unreliable as a daily.

I'm wiring in a TT because now its getting to winter I want to be able to have the car warming up in a morning while i'm still getting ready, without me having to leave the keys in and doors unlocked...that and they do run quite warm, so would just give piece of mine letting the oil circulate without it shutting off straight away, i'm not just doing it to make little chavs think its cool haha, the one i've got states its an Auto timer for turbo and N/a anyway.

I've built up a custom harness as obviously they don't do an off the shelf one for a saxo, this will mean no cutting and splicing of ignition wires as thats a bit bodgy in my opinion.
I just want to find out if I can use the handbrake as a ground meaning it will shut off the engine if the handbrake is released?

Can i ask why you didnt just get an alarm with a remote start as then you can start the car from your room with the doors still locked and alarm still active... I have a clifford alarm with a remote start that i am needing to fit before winter for that very reason

I like to do things myself if I can, and I wouldn't know where to start with fitting an alarm lol, also, i'm trying to keep a bit of money saved for the MOT and putting some aside to maybe turbo it like i say(I think I may start saving for a Glanza though...have always wanted one and I need to get one soon before I grow up haha), the timer is fine enough for what I need, because knowing me I'd end up leaving the car in gear and forget before the morning

I don't think anyone knows if my idea will work, I had a thought earlier that with me using the handbrake circuit as a ground, means the timer will flicker on and off with the handbrake,so this may be annoying i'll have to see, also the integrated Air/Fuel feature with the timer I bought will only work with the handbrake on I assume.

Any good remote start alarm has either a wire that connects to the neutral switch on your gearbox (some manuals, including the BAs, although I know you're talking about a Saxo, have them, not just autos) to stop it starting if it doesn't know the car is not in gear,

or

they have a procedure built into the logic, whereby you have to have the car running, apply handbrake, press button on fob, take keys out (engine keeps running) and lock the doors, after which the ignition is cut off by the alarm. This way, the car knows that when you got out and locked the car, it wasn't in gear. If you unlock the car anytime before activating the remote start, it cancels and won't let you start it remotely without repeating the above :thumbright: Personally I'd go for the neutral switch option... less faff, and you don't have to remember to go through the above.

Otherwise I'd be the same as you, knowing my luck I'd leave it in gear and find the car buried in a wall somewhere

As for your original question - do you mean connect the turbo timers ground wire, as in, the negative (vs positive) power wire to the handbrake switch wire?

Ah I see mate, that seems a handy feature then, as I say though i've already bought the timer and created my own harness so will do this option I think.

And yeah thats it mate, one of the wires to my handbrake switch ifyou probe with the negative on the multimeter, it only becomes a 12v circuit when the handbrake is on, so i was gonna use that as the ground...i think it will work but will mean when im driving around and on and off the handbrake ill get the timers display going on and off?

Hmmm, so your handbrake switch has two wires, rather than just one that is connected to ground when you apply the handbrake?

If its two wires, then I wouldn't like to say.

If you ground the timer through the hand brake then it will only be on when the hand brake is on, so you wont get to use any of its features... unless you have an override inline switch to earth the timer. Then while the handbrake is off the switch is on then put hand brake on and switch it off and leave the car.

Also i don't know if the hand brake earth will be big enough as the earth on our turbo timer is bigger than the hand brake wire.

it would probably easier to buy a new turbo timer with the hand brake feature in.

Also ours has a speedo safety feature where if the speedo moves it kills the ignition as well so yours may just have that instead

has no one done this on a Saxo forum and can offer hands on advice?

for example we used a HKS RX-7 turbo timer harness as i think you suggested as the plugs were the same.

Cheers

Nathan

Ah yeah thats what I thought mate, maybe your right it might have a feature such as the speed one, if not i'll just remember to lock the steering or such.

And nah I don't think they have mate, I dont need saxo specific help though i'vealready created a custom harness :thumbright:

Ah did the rx7 one work?I thought they would be similar.

All sorted, turned out the timer was a genuine Apexi which I thought for the price it would be fake, so the handbrake feature works.

Weird thing is when I wired it the way the instructions said of green to ignition 1 and blue to ignition 2 the timer would count down as soon as the enigne was started, I swapped the two wires round so blue was ignition 1 and green was ignition 2 and now its all working.

Yep plugged straight in and has worked ever since! had to chop the 3 way plug off the end and put my own one on though as we didnt have the matching half.

Glad you got it working.
i know what you mean about the fake apexi stuffi bought an air filter turned out to be fake so i bought a proper one the week after! luckily i never fitted the fake one to the car!

:D

You mean the one which connects the timer itself to the harness? Yeah i just plugged insulated spade terminals into mine.

And yeah I was rather glad when it turned out to be genuine, even tho its not fitted to some big bhp car it still makes me feel better about it :thumbright:
