Interesting question - I was thinking of doing rings and big-end bearings on my 1.8 16v, and was wondering if anyone knew whether or not it can be done without removing the engine ? I've looked through my Haynes, and it doesn't actually specify, although it does appear that you can remove the head and the sump with the engine in place ...

I'd rather do it myself if I could, especially since a friend of mine took his BMW bike to the official BMW dealer for a service, and it siezed on his way home, 'cause they forgot to replace the motor oil they drained from the motor .....

Careful there Lantis - not all MX-5 engines are the same.

Interesting site though :)

You have to remove the whole engine for the piston rings as the bottom end needs to be taken out to replace them. It was going to cost me £900 to get my rings changed, so i just went for a new engine instead and it cost me almost the same price!

I had a friend with a 2.0 V4 Cortina - he put a 3.0 V6 straight onto the V4 box. he didn't have the top-end you'd expect from a 3.0 V6, but nothing could touch him from traffic light to traffic light .....

is that because he kept the ols gearbox?

would this damage it in time?

Surly there aint much difference between a 1.5 and a 1.8 gearbox?

Yup - he kept the original gearbox, and drove it around bloody hard for 2 years until it was stolen, and he never had any problems. I'd expect there is a greater power difference between a 2.0 V4 and a 3.0 V6 than there is between a 1.5 and a 1.8, so I'd presume that the 1.5 gearbox could handle the power from a 1.8, although I'm not a profesional, so don't quote me.

I'll look up the ratios in my Haynes manual tonight and see what the difference is.

Unfortunately, Haynes doesn't mention the ratios, however, it does say ...

General information
The vehicles covered by this manual are equipped with a 5-speed manual transaxle or 4-speed automatic transaxle. Information on the manual transaxle is included in this Part of Chapter 7. Service procedures for the automatic transaxle are contained in Chapter 7, Part B.
The manual transaxle is a compact, two-piece, lightweight aluminium alloy housing containing both the transmission and differential assemblies. A F5M-R transaxle is used with the 1,6L and 1.8L SOHC engines and a G5M-R unit is used with the 1.8L DOHC engine for 1990 through 1992 model years. The 1993 and 1994 transaxles were desig-nated as F25M-R for SOHC engines and G25M-R for the DOHC engine. The 1995 and later models use the F25M-R transaxle for both the 1,5L and the 1.8L DOHC engines. All transaxles are virtually identical except for different gear ratios.

This would seem to imply that the 1.5 & the 1.8 DOHC use the same gear box.

In case anyone is interested, I do have the ratios for the 1.8 and the 2.0 V6 form my owners manual ...
