I'm looking at using a 1.8 BG GT as a donor engine for my z5. Can this be done easily ish? What extras would I need. Anyone done it before? I would do a full rebuild on the engine but from the sounds of it, it runs well already

Have you tried looking for Kash's old z5 - bpt thread? I guess mechanically it'd be similar to that. I'd guess you'd need a few 1.8 BA parts (Driveshafts, hubs etc) :dontknow:

depends how you want to do it

You could "upgrade" your car to a BA 1.8 and then add in the BG GT engine

or

You could up use all the BG GT stuff

Changing your EMission loom to the 1.8 BA one wouldnt be a difficult job (i dont recall noticing any differences on the wiring - but its easily checkable) if you decide to go down the GT wiring route then you'll need some patience cos there will be some splicing to be done

Other than wiring, you will need a new gearbox, driveshafts, hubs and carriers

IF the 1.5 redlines at a different point to the 1.8 may be worth changing to the 1.8 clocks......

Not a massively hard project - but i'd get everything you need before you start, and i'd triple check that you got all you need

Best person to ask is AndyM - he's done loads of research into this

Matt

I was going to rob all the parts off the GT. Would the GT hubs etc not fit the ba? Or could I use the bg struts as well?

Didn't M1tch do a BA-GT conversion that went to pop when he lost interest?

Granted he already had the 1.8 engine

I have one sat on my drive as we speak :D

Paul, to do it for a 1.5 is a LOT of work, you can only use the BG engine, and, if you're quite mad, the ECU too!

But, since you need to fit so much from the 1.8 BA to make it work, the best way to do it is to get a 1.8 BA, swap the entire front end and engine loom plus ECU :D

If you wanna have a chat about it, drop me a PM and I'll give you my mobile number :D

I definately not recommend the BG conversion (as in full conversion) as far as i know it's unproven and i think would cause more headaches than it would gains, i also would recommend sticking with the BA

I dont know how quickly you want to get this going.....

For breakers:

wyvern has a breaking 1.8 - it would be the f series box and shafts, but still it would give you the base for the project

or, there is a white 1.8 being broken by a guy who was pointed our way from ebay - again, it would be an F series box but it's a start

Likewise, if i can help in any way drop me a pm - also, as we''re all going to JAE, we can have a chat about it there as well :thumbright:

I dont know where i'd draw the line between BA and BG though, the Dizzys are different, the BG has the "condensor" on it

Andy, Did Mitch install the condensor onefrom the BG or swap over to the BA dizzy??

i'd get the running gear from the BA, and then look for a nice GT lump to put in in place of the BA 1.8 engine :thumbright:

Seems everyone pretty much saying I need a 1.8 BA which isn't going to happen! I'll have a word with my mate and show him this thread. Meant to be going see the guy about the gt tonight. We'll see what he's asking, if its less than £100 i might just get it and move all the gear to my BG as its a lot nicer!

We never said to get a 1.8 to replace your 1.5 car, we said to upgrade your car to a 1.8 using a 1.8 BA donor, and then add the GT engine to it, this would be the easiest way to do it :thumbright:

Apologies if mine and Andy's replies sounded like we recommended that you replace your car, cos that certainly isnt what we are suggesting

And we're both more than happy to give you all the advice you need with the conversion :thumbright:

Sorry I misread. Andy put "the best way to do it is to get a 1.8ba" then I missed the bit that said use it to swap the front end! Cheers guys

Sorry dude, my bad, I was typing in a hurry :S

The reason I want to do it this way is for reliability, since the BA and BG engines are a direct swap, I just think using the 1.8 BA bits and pieces is the most reliable if most faffy way of proceeding :)

And I'm know for my faffing ;)

If you take Shaggy's BA-GTX beast for example, what he did was essentially what you were suggesting but with a turbo attached :)

The BA has a different intake and ignition system than the BG, and unless you know your wiring, it can be a very hasslebound transplant, Shaggy had major electrical issues wiring up the GTX ECU and I think the coil ended up being powered from the stereo positive :O

It can be done though, so if you fancy it give it a go :D

Also, the BG and BA use differnt rated fuses for different systems, which can be a bit of a ballache

As Andy says - if you fancy it, it could be done, but i for one dont have the books for the GT looms, i think they may be available somewhere in russian or something. but i do have wiring books for the BA :thumbright:
Which is why i suggested the 1.5 to 1.8 BA upgrade and then put in the GT engine, as we can check for any differences between the 1.5 and 1.8 BA in my books :thumbright:

If you take Shaggy's BA-GTX beast for example, what he did was essentially what you were suggesting but with a turbo attached :)
Its been done and working, thing is the MOT!

Emissions are F'ed

I think it was done using BP loom, the guy who's done
it is on here occasionally...
Yeah it has been done ;) with the 1.5 transmission and the long axle from an 1.6 bg and the hub on that side also from the 1.6. disc and caliper from the 1.5 and voila

and some parts from the 1.8 ba needed.

Emissions are fine, IF you place your cat.conv back in place.

Still wanting this info? Its maybe some old topic...
