For a simple BP-BPT conversion you will need the following minimum:

- Motor
For the standard conversion, I recommend buying a GTX or GTR Half cut from Japan. This will come with motor, ecu, wiring harness, intercooler and plumbing.
Any parts not used can be sold off.
Cost is generally around the £1000 mark

- Replacement Clutch
Recommend a single plate organic HD clutch for a basic conversion. Expect to pay around £150. Daiken is an excellent brand although there are others.

- Belts/Seals/Oils
You should always replace all belts, seals and lubricants in the motor.
Cost will be around £100/150 all up.

- Labour Charges
Any general mechanic can put do this conversion as it is as simple as remove and replace. Expect to pay anywhere upto £500 for this. You will also need someone to wire the motor in using the standard harness. Your mechanic may be able to do it, if not any auto electrician can do it for you. This will cost upto £200 generally.

This will provide you with a basic turbo conversion.

Total cost (excluding insurance) = 2K max. if you are lucky and know the right people or are doing the work yourself = £1150 or so.

Please be aware the above is based on a half cut. Engines can be bought separate if required. They are roughly 700 pounds (excluding ECU, wiring looms, intercooler and plumbing.)

not at all the case. there are quite a few differences.
so please, nobody just bolt a turbo onto their n/a engine and expect it to run like a bpt :)

also, i definitely recommend a half cut, not just the engine.

plus u can sell the leftovers afterwards)

if u get a half-cut, isnt the gear box that comes with it a 4WD gearbox and therefore useless unless u wanna add a rear differential?

Has anyone seen, used or heard of this company?

http://www.apiengines.com

Looks like they do Mazda lumps, but not sure if ther do the GTX, might be worth phoning them if you interested in a engine transplant.

Ali

yes they have different turbos, internals, the GTR is a slightly better engine, tho when it breaks it costs more to fix. you can get 280-300 BHP from the GTX, so its best to buy a GTX and spend the extra you save on new bits for it :)

after extensive research on google i have found that it is Borderline Personality Disorder :?

:D

The BPD is commonly known as the 'big turbo' variant as it utilised a much larger IHI RHF6CB turbocharger. The BPT was used as the basis for the engine, with changes such as sodium filled exhaust valves, larger (and front mounted) intercooler, bigger fuel injectors and stronger engine internals helping to up the performance of the engine to produce 206 hp (154 kW) and 184 ft·lbf (250 N·m). This engine was designed to power Mazda to a world rally championship win, and was thus used in the limited production Mazda Familia GT-R (2200 built) and GTAe (300 built).

Applications:

1989-1994 Mazda Familia GT-X (Japan)
1992-1993 (BPD) Mazda Familia GT-R / GTAe (Japan)
1989-1994 Ford Laser TX3 turbo (Australia)
Ford Laser GT-X
