....I think that may just be how the car behaves.... Mine's ALWAYS been like that!

...have you also got the strange dip/flat-spot between 2500-3000 revs as well? :P

well yes just a slight dip/ flat spot at that rev range . but saying that i have just put the old plug leads back on and it seems to be a little better (used new adl leads that are a little bit thinner) so we will see how it progresses . i may have to get the mazda leads . but i think i will put it in the garage to get it checked out first

I have only had my V6 for a few months, but from what I have found the engine does have its quirks, some days it runs like a dream, others it seams flat, when the sun shines it goes faster... The car was built to be quicker at high revs so you do get so called flat spots under 4000 rpm... This could be something to do with the way the engine was designed to warm up quicker than conventional engines, to on that note I could be talking out of my rear :?

If you drive at higher revs you get all the performance and the engine sounds sweet.

I changed my filter for a K&N direct replacement and although some of the flat spots have gone you dont get the kick it used to give at 4000rpm so I think maybe its back to a standard filter and suffer the lag before the kick..

My V6 also suffers from a flat spot just below 3k, then goes mental when it hits 4k. Are we concluding this is just the way these engines are?

Anyone tried running a tank of Optimax through?. I noticed an improvement to the power delivery from the engine. When I went back to regular Shell 4* it seemed even more lively ?? Wierd??

ref the pulling away problem.

It could be fuel related. Had an old Astra with single carb on it and it did exactly the same thing. It turned out the one of the fuel needles was slightly clogged so at low fuel pressure, ie liftoff, it restricted the fuel to much. The fuel economy was great though.

As yours is injectors they may be clogged, or have you checked your fuel filter? It can restrict just the same.

If there is a fuel shortage it takes the ECU a couple of seconds to sort it self out hence the hesitation.

I think there's a simple test that a garage can do to check the injectors, though i could be wrong

I've only used Optimax ever since I picked up my zxi 15 months ago. Only once out of pure desperation I had to put "normal" petrol in, never again as the engine was stuttering all over the place under 1500 revs. nasty.

I tried a tank of 'mortal' unleaded recently and I concur; NEVER AGAIN!!!

I have run Optimax in the car from the moment I got it, about 2 years ago. I also put octane booster into the fuel frequently.

I was talking to the guy at Carnoissuer in Cambridge earlier and he had a theory that it may well be a vaccum leak somewhere.... as he mentioned it I remembered that the rubber pipe that connects the Air Mass Meter and Air Filter to the throttle body is looking a little tired and that I had actually bought a new one a while back meaning to replace it.

I will replace the pipe tonight, re-tune the Ecotek and give it a run to see if the flat spot was due to a leak in the rubber pipe under a certain pressure.

Also getting a JR induction kit that was made specifically for the ZXi as my current one was a 'universal' and I don't think my 'bodge' solution for including that little rubber (vacuum?) pipe is working.

Strangely enough, I did manage to get rid of the flat spot for a very short while by re-setting the ECU (disconnect Negative battery point and hold your foot on the brake pedal for 20-30 seconds, then re-attach battery cable). The flat spot was gone for about a day and a half. I have tried this again since to no effect (damned 'smart' engines!! :P )

DO ANY OF OUR MAZDA-TRAINED MEMBERS HAVE ANY IDEAS ON THIS PROBLEM?
