Ever since I got my 1.5 LXi the intermittent wiper setting has not worked. I tried connecting another wiper motor in case the bit that controls intermitent wiping was in that, but no, it's all part of the stalk assembly which fits round the steering column
If you need to change the stalks controlling wipers (and indicators) here's how I did it. The controls are identical on the 1.5 and the V6 (also probably on 1.8 ) so get a replacement anywhere you can
So, off with the three screws under the plastic steering column cover (mind the bulb that push-fits next to the ignition barrel). Then the four 10mm bolts behind the steering wheel that hold the air-bag assembly to the steering wheel. Ignition off, key out is probably safest
Big 21mm bolt holds the steering wheel to the column. Before removing the steering wheel, remember to mark where it fits so you can put it back on the same splines it came off. I forgot and took three goes (remove/refit) to get my steering wheel to feel 'straight' again when I'm not cornering
Being very careful not to be in the direct line of explosion, disconnect the air bag wires and undo the screw holding the clip round the wire to the steering wheel (left-side in this photo, yellow wire)
With the steering wheel off you undo three screws holding the round plastic bit to the main plastic assembly
Then undo the screws holding the rest of the assembly to the steeering column. The round plastic tube in the middle (indicator cancel thing) has a spring behind it, so don't lose that!
Undo the wiring connectors, which is easiest if you take off the plastic panel just above the foot pedals. Ping this panel off with a small flat scredriver (panel is at far end of dashboard, where the door closes against it) Undo these two screws (they hold the end of the lower panel) The lower panel then just unclips nicely with a bit of force

With the wiper/indicator assembly off the steering column, route the wires on the replacement part in the same way as the old ones. I used cable ties to hold them all nicely
Reassembly is the reverse - screw the main stalk assembly to the steering columns, then fit the round bit (with incicator-cancelling tube and spring in place) and screw that on. Reconnect the wires. Worth checking it all works at this point, before you put the steering wheel back on. It does't seem to matter that the drivers air-bag is disconnected, but I'd make sure your ignition is off before reconnecting it
If all's good, put the steering wheel back on the same splines as it came off (you did remember to mark it, didn't you?)
Tidy the cables within the steering wheel (refit screw clip) then bolt the air bag back in place. Refit the plastic parts (remember to push that ignition-barrel bulb back in place), you're all done!
