What you will need:
10mm Socket and Ratchet for Airbag removal
22mm socket for the shaft nut
Wire Strippers
Soldering Iron and Solder
Heat Shrink or electrical tape
Paper and a Crayon
Pritt Stick
Drill with a 5mm drill bit

Step 1: Disconnect the battery, should be a 10mm nut. Depress the brake a few times and then leave for about 5 minutes to ensure the power has left the circuits.

Step 2: Ensure your wheels are straight as this means your steering wheel will go on nicely afterwards. Using the 10mm socket remove the 4 bolts which hold the airbag in (2 on each side) Unplug the 2 connectors and put the airbag/horn assembly to one side.

Step 3: Using the 22mm socket undo the centre nut. This can be quite tight so if there is someone available to hold the wheel still it would be an advantage(I managed it on my own). Once the nut is off, put it back on! But only until the shaft fills the nut.

Step 4: Brace your knees under the bottom of the steering wheel. Pull in a rocking motion on the top of the wheel and it should pop loose. This is where keeping the nut on helps avoid you hitting yourself in the face! Remove the nut and the wheel. You may now lock up and go to your work area.

You should be left with this in the car:

Take note of the purple pointy plastic thing. This is what controls knocking your indicator off and will become apparent later on.

Step 5: Place your two air bag units side by side and it should look like this:

The air bag wires go to the centre of both assemblies and have 2 red wires (Ba wheel has the Blue plug and BJ wheel has the Yellow plug.
BA

BJ

Step 6: If you intend on scrapping the BA wheel do as I did, remove the protective plastic cover(just pops off) and cut the wires as close to the wheel as possible. On the BJ wheel cut the wires as close to the plug as you can so you have plenty of wire to play with.
BA

BJ

Step 7: Remove the yellow sheath on the BJ wires as this tends to get in the way. Also cut back the black sheath on the BA blue plug. Now using wire strippers remove some of the insulation. Twist the ends so it doesn't fray. Cut some heat shrink tubing and place on the wires for use later(better do it now than have to un-solder your wires). You should use a longer and wider piece of heat shrink on the BJ part so it can slide over both wires later, I didn't have a wider piece but it's not too important.

BA

BJ

Step 8: Tin all the wires, 2 on the plug and 2 on the air bag. This will make it easier when joining the wires.
As all the wires are the same it doesn't matter which you join to which. So using a third hand to hold your wires in place solder 2 wires together. Slip the small length of heat shrink onto the connection and heat it up so it's insulated. Then do the same to the other wires. Once both joins done cover them with the larger heatshrink to make things a little nicer.

Step 9: Remove the horn connector(orange) from the BA wheel leaving plenty of wire to play with. Cut the connector off the BJ main wheel and then use Step 8 to connect the BA plug

Step 9: Looking at the back of the BJ and BA wheel you will notice slight differences. The BJ wheel has knotches in the side and the BA wheel has knotches at the top and bottom. These knotches are where the Purple spiky thing sit to control the indicators.

BA

BJ

Step 10: Using a piece of paper and a crayon, do a rubbing of the back of the BA wheel. This will give you a nice template. Cut it out and stick it onto the back of the BJ wheel with some Pritt Stick. Be sure to line it up correctly.

Step 11: Using the drill and the 5mm drill bit drill the holes where the template shows you. It's relatively easy to drill so be carefull. I stopped every now and then and used the drill bit to measure the depth. Once the holes are as deep as the bottom hole on the BA wheel that is more than enough.

Step 12: Time to fit your wheel :D Take the main wheel and ensuring it is straight push it all the way home on the shaft, feeding the wires through as you go. Put the 22mm nut back on and tighten as much as you can(I'm sure some smart a**e knows the torque if you really want to know!). Get your airbag and connect up the horn wire and air bag wire. Tuck all the wires inside and then secure the air bag with 2 of the four bolts you took out the other wheel.

Step 13: Reconnect battery and pray air bag doesn't go off (It shouldn't unless you majorly screwed up)

Et Voila!

Great guide mate 8)

Always something I wanted to do when I had a BA, as I always thought the standard BA wheel was ugly

Amazing guide mate.
Took me around 10 mibs to do this.
Just to edit a little bit, its a 22mm socket to remove the wheel not 17mm as stated 8)

I must say these wheels are amazing and make such a differance to the interior.
They also feel much better as you have more grip.
The wheels are also smaller the the OEM ones and the horn is better as you dont have to find that silly button when your in the middle of turning. You just smack the middle of the wheel.

If anyones interestedin one , I have one up for grabs.
See for sale section.

Nice one Paul
:D

Worth a mention that the 626 wheel fits aswell as it's pretty much the same as the BJ wheel. I used this guide aswell 8)

This worked perfectly for me too, using a Nardi MX5 wheel. 20 minutes work and feels so much nicer :)
