May sound silly but have you let the oven heat up?

And maybe close the door...I did...set the oven to about 90...put them in for 5-10 mins with door closed but keep checking. If that isn't melting them....you're ovens broken

Let it heat up for half an hour while I removed the headlights and made tea

Oven was on 200, I could see the elements glowing bright red so I know it works :p left one of them inside for about 15 minutes, with the door shut. Headlight burnt to the touch, plastic was a little soft, glue would not budge :(

Also tried a hairdryer, same problem - burnt fingers, bent plastic, solid glue. Given up now, headlights are back on the car  I'll just keep shitty headlights :(

But surely they will do the same thing...

The plastic along the top of the glass is all bent up - I could easily remove the glass but it wouldn't be salvagable.

I might have another go when I've got some more time - leave both lights in the oven at about 90deg for a couple of hours to make sure the heat gets all the way through.

Darrens spare light is broken  so i could remove the glass and paint it, but what would be the point, it would be broken :p I'll see if i can get some from the scrappy, then leave them in the oven for a few days and have another go.

well at least you can find out if it is going to be the same to remove the glass and you can find the best way of removing the glass, then you can give the projector to me :)

Stuz, I might have a projector bit from the first headlight that I melted

Is it the entire projector(Glass, metal bracket, etc) or just a certian part of it?

Hughie I wouldn't leave them in for days :O I stuck mine it at 150 first time round for 10 mins as someone told me to...came back to a piece of glass and some molten plastic dripping onto the bottom of the oven

20 minutes at 200 degrees didn't soften mine anywhere near enough...

I think a good hour or so at about 100deg should do it, but i havent got time for a few weeks now :(

Hughie, thats really strange....i'm guessing either your oven isn't heating up correctly? Either that or you have superhuman headlights

Stu...okay mate, well I'll see if I can find the old headlight....got a feeling I gave my dad the projector lens though as it worked as a good magnifying glass for a watch he was fixing

Oven cooked a chicken tonight perfectly, I'm going with superman headlights

Strangely, I don't think many people would let me fill their oven with headlights :p it's ok I'll have another try in a few weeks with some new headlights, leave them in there for a while and let them get properly hot.

Seeing as this topic has been linked to recently, thought I better update and say that I managed to split a new pair of headlights in the end. 200deg for 20 minutes a headlight, with it sitting in the oven on the glass (so the black plastic pointed upwards), then pried for about 5 minutes whilst burning my fingers. It was bloody tough but they came apart.

Subsequently, I also managed to split the pair I had a problem with. Same procedure, but was A LOT more difficult to remove the glass - it would seem they've been opened before and someone used 90000 tonnes of glue to reseal them

Anyone trying this, you need some upper body strength  try the lower temps first, if they dont work, try increasing the temp slightly and leaving it in for a little longer, checking on it often to make sure it hasn't melted :thumbleft:

Hughie I forgot to reply to this, on the new automobile I did this, one headlight came apart same temps as the Mazda, the other headlight however which had been replaced with a brand new item recently, was a pain in the a**e to do, the glue wouldn't soften like you mentioned, in the end I heated it and pried it apart whilst cutting most of the glue with a razor blade, and ressealed with tiger seal, I then did the fog lights and they were similar, the glue wasn't this soften under heat type... weird :?

I've got a question though, as I mention I did this on my new car, one of the headlights has stayed really crystal clear, the other one after a couple of days went murky/steamed up inside...its kinda like condensation but it doesn't look like moisture...just a bit smogged up, and it doesn't depend on the weather, go away its just stayed there :? I tried opening the light and resealing twice, it came back, i then tried opening, removing the glue and tiger sealing like the other and its still come back..any ideas people?

Cheers

Well mine had been opened and resealed at some point I guess :)

Hmmm try opening them and waxing the inside of the lens maybe?
