Okay, I’m after a favour off some kind person….
I work for a company that has a Mercedes contract, and whilst I was in Yate today collecting stuff, I had a good old nose round. I spotted some lush looking gas dampers, perfect for replacing my bonnet lifters with possibly some with the correct length = 37cm. The exceptionally friendly bloke gave me contact details of the manufacturer he gets them off who will make me custom made perfect length beauts for nowt :jizzstain:

Thing is – he asked me what Nm of pressure I required…..! or what was the weight of the bonnet in Kg’s.

So, if anyone has a BA bonnet loose from an F, and would weigh it for me I’d be mucho greatful

I have a bonnet lying around Stu, if I knew how to weigh such a large item I would do it straight away for you!

do you have fishing style scales in your house by any chance??

or normal bathroom jobbies....? a good close estimate or it on the scales lent against a wall will be ace

Any chance of getting some of them correct length lifters too Stu? Or is it a cleanie unique mod? (also would it be different for my bonnet anyway what with the difference in weight?)

In another post Murray reckons 14kg... I don't have any scales that go past 5kg

normal bathtub scale is good enough... just weigh yourself, than weigh yourself holding the bonnet... then just use [-]

The ones I have fitted now are 430mm long (inc ball ends) and in order to fit into the original BA wing M6x1 10mm bolt - they need to be 370mm

Just a thought Stu, but wouldn't the weight requirement be dependent on where the bonnet is lifted from?
EG... if you lift the bonnet leading edge its fairly light, but if you try lifting it from nearer the hinge...... well you get the picture.

Maybe you could weigh your bonnet with a bog scale sitting atop your engine, and a board propped between the bonnet and scale. You'd need to remove your existing bonnet lifters though.

if you measure the distance the struts are going to be attached to the wing and bonnet from the pivoting point of the bonnet, and also find out the angle that the bonnet will be at when fully open the you should be able to work out the exact lifting weight. the right equation escapes me at the moment but i could rack my brain if you need it to be spot on mate.

You could:
Lay the bonnet on the floor, put a stick of rough height (to prop the bonnet up by about 45 degrees - fully open will give a lighter weight as the hinged end will be providing more support) under the bonnet along the line where the lifters will be attached to the bonnet. Under the stick, place the scales.

Divide result by 2.

It's all about vectors isn't it?

Or. If it's off of the car, weigh yourself, then pick up the bonnet and weigh again then subtract the lesser weight from the greater weight (with bonnet)

Actually, just had a thought ... duh! You could do this with the bonnet on the car!

stand on the scales yourself an weigh yourself. then pick up the bonnet and subtract the weight of yourself from the weight of yourself and the bonnet

hes the one lads ive got it you dont need the weight of the bonnest as the bonnet is never being lifted off the floor perfect example you can move a ton of sand in a wheel barrow but try pick it up and you wont move it. so!

bath room scales on the floor near you fron wheel way your self lifting the bonnet (WB) *where you will be attaching your lifters! then way your self (W) WB-W= weight of bonnet on Strut should thing it will be anything over a few Kgs

i was told it was around 14kg by gazz when he got the replacement one for julie

id check it yourself though to be sure since your getting stuff made up for it, its fine quoting 14kg for an estimate but if its wrong itll be a pita! don't want it blasting the bonnet off now do we?

All I'm after is some kind soul who has currently got their bonnet off, to weigh it

When you find out stu could you get me some? I have lifters for my car but they are too strong and my bonnet bent instead of lifters goin down!

Are these things really that finely tuned?
Surely a rough guesstimate should suffice, maybe weighing it with fishing scales at the leading edge while its still on the car?
I know when the bonnet drops on your fingers its about 500 kg's!!!
