Ok so your thinking of going turbo, well read this first and add stuff :)

First u have to decide what kinda power u want to put out? a rough figure, this will allow u to trim your turbo needs.

there is 3 kits avalible that ive found for the 2.0, 2 packages from protegegarage, and 1 from turbo kits.com (avoid this at all costs)

the turbo kits kit, might be cheap however u get what u pay for, ive read reports of items not fitting and and parts not working. these kits are usally very good on civcs etc, but it appears from investigation that the protege one isnt very good.

http://www.turbokits.com/protege_turbo_kits.html

Protegegarage sell 2 kits, ones the full kit and comes with a haltech ems, its set up with a base map that should see u running 220bhp. haltech ems is very easy to use and tuning would be required to get the best gains. this kit also comes with a dump valve, from what im reading its an hks one. which is pretty decent. i did find a guide on blow off valves which i'll put up at somtime. bascially a review of the main ones. :)

http://mazda3online.web.aplus.net/produ ... cts_id=103

The second kit protege garage sells is exactly the same as the first but it doesnt come with a bov or an ems. so u get to choose your own. i priced it up and if u get an hks bov, and the mirotech ems it comes out slightly cheaper than the full kit. very slighty though. however from what im reading if u buy the kits from protegegarage, ken will send u the ems set up roughly for the mods u have :)

http://mazda3online.web.aplus.net/produ ... cts_id=520

building your own is the other option which i will post a topic about in a bit.

with regards to the kits, yes there easy to install ive seen the guide it doesnt look that hard. however without uprating other things such as internals and oil pans to name a few, u risk messing your engine up. and even once uve installed it its much better to get a full tune done, to make sure everythings running right.

on stock internals the max boost u should safely run is 7-8psi, although even this is risky, if u have an engine thats a bit worn or just unluckly.

Just to add to Ryans comments.....

I spoke in length with AVA Turbo's in Glasgow and with a rep from Hi-Boost who suppply the kits to Protegegarage.

- Yes you can run the kits on stock internals, however it would be pretty inefficient due to the compression ratio of the FS. To solve that problem you would need to look at replacing the stock pistons with forged items which will add another $600 roughly to the price.

- You need to take into account your exhaust. Most standard systems and aftermarket NA systems run a smaller diameter pipe. For a proper turbo set up you need at least 2.5" diameter piping.

- Not quite so important initially, but replacing the clutch for a stronger aftermarket one would have to be a consideration.

- Bear in mind the kits dont include useful items like boost gauges or turbo timers

- Also bear in mind that before you consider increasing the power you should first think if the standard suspension and brakes can cope - this is what keeps you attached to the black stuff afterall!!

All in all the specialist at AVA was of the opinion that the Hiboost kit is good value, taking into account what is provided and the brands they claim to supply. Its also the kit that has been available the longest and has seen off several other cheaper kits.

I was also advised that the cheaper variation of the kit without the EMS or BOV would not be worthwhile...as bear in mind if its all supplied at once its saving a little on shipping/tax.

Finally.....when I priced up the Hiboost kit, including pistons, clutch, shipping, tax and fitting....the costs jumped from the initial 2500GBP to around 5000GBP

Its an expensive mistake if it goes wrong!

nice one doug, thats about the price i got when totalling stuff up. it seems anyway that it might be cheaper buying a built engine, already with the forged internals. im a engine noob really, i reckon i could build it myself with a little time, but at the moment i dont know what damage has been caused by my outing with no oil lol

Forgive my early morning lack of intelligence...

isn't it better to have a lower compression ratio when adding a tubby? I thought you needed to on certain engines anyway? if you look at the specs on other cars, the turbo'd ones have lower compression than the NA ones.

I dunno, £5k + my F - seems like a fair deposit on a 3 MPS...

Yes...and no :)

The myth "you need to lower the compression when going turbo" is a tough one to get rid of, i understand. because the engine management system and aftermarket systems on the old turbo-cars wasnt as good as todays new cars and engine managements, they had to lower compression.
The mazda 323GTR for ex. is an old turbocar, and it runs a compression of 8,2:1
A new Audi turbocar for ex. is running what? Something like 10:1 or something, as high as a N/A car! This is because modern knock-controllers, sensors and engine management, BOTH STANDARD and aftermarket ones gives you better control of the A/F ratio, timing and firing of the sparkplug, wich again gives you the ability to raise compression for more bang(power) :) Therefore, they have more grunt in the low end(high compression to help when the turbo is not spinning, wich again gives more exhaust to spin up the turbo, wich then again, helps on turbolag), and still runs a boosted setup.

If you take a standard N/A engine, turbo it, you must run low boosts(up to 0,6bar) to prevent internals cracking, and prevent wrong detonation, wich causes the engine to seize up cause the original ECU cant keep up, and melts/cracks the piston. :)

5K£ to reach around 250bhp, with ability to go for more, isnt that bad actually :)
Im rebuilding my GTR engine(500bhp in a FBG), and i have passed 10K£ a long time ago. Tuning cars are tits-and-arse expencive stuff, simple and easy :) If you go for it, you have to commit 100% all the way :)

But.... 5000£, that sounds like alot of cash just for å turbokit, the price must surely include fitting the stuff as well, or? If so, you can cut that price in half if you do the mechanical stuff yourself, and just leave the mapping/tuning up to the pros :)

yer the built internals do lower the compression ratio, u dont need to do it, however you wont get half as good gains without lowering the compression ratio. i think thats right anyway. bear in mind though that the 5k, really includes everything such a clutch, ems, the whole lot, to see u running about 250+bhp. u get so much more bang for your buck with turbo mods.

ah, as long as the 5K includes EVERYTHING you need for a durable street setup, the price isnt bad at all! :)
Welcome to the turbo-tuning world, lads ;)
As the bang for the buck-ratio is higher than in N/A tuning, things pretty much speaks for itself :)

How much is a good Nos set up???

Could safely take the sport to something near 200bhp for very little money... :drunken:

negative mate, the rod/pistons are so weak in our engines it cant really be done saftely, theres a tonne of threads in america where people have just blown the engine :(, although it can be used with a build engine :)

Anyone priced up a decent complete engine swap and compared it to a turbo kit? I would have thought that it would be cheaper to get a decent NA engine which pumps out just as much HP (or more) as a turbo'ed stock engine?

Though a turbo would be nice just so that you can get a nice dump valve for it. Gotta love the whoosh, though personally I prefer the supercharger whine! Shame the WMP supercharger fell through! :)

Speed Circuit has produced a kit for the 2.0 Bj

http://www.speedcircuit.net/product_inf ... 0c6ca73e7c

Price comes in at £2167 + £250 Shipping ( Ive emailed them for a shipping price) + import tax on top of that.

Also need to factor in the price of a standalone,eManage Blue. A decent Wideband O2 gauge, plus oil pressure / boost gauge and maybe a timer. also fitting for it all.

So with all this in mind I estimate Around £3500 all in :dontknow: Is it worth it for an extra 50-60bhp ?

Considering you can buy an mps 2.4 turbo engine for that, it looks less worth while...
Still love to have that whooooosh though ;)

Funnily enough I came across this item as a pre-order a few weeks ago scouring american sites for protege parts and had a good long hard think about how awesome it would be since I cant see my changing from a BJ anytime soon.

Yeah, as great as whoooosh would be I couldnt begin to think about spending twice the value of the car itself on a turbo kit, not for what.. 180hp? Especially on an engine with 92k miles :(

yeah, you have only the engine... what are you going to do with it then?
prepare to spend two to three times that to even get it to work!

cheapest way for more power is still putting on a turbo in what you already have!

But what if you just love your BJ and can't imagine driving anything else (in your budget, ie. me) ? :)
