I was checking the parts catalogue and found out there's a different camshaft for the leaded fuel BP-ZE motor... anyone know any specs on this? It should be listed in the service manual if any of you guys have it. I'm going to have to assume that it has a more aggressive profile at the moment as that is typically the case for many Japanese engines in Europe. I know this for a fact with the FE3 motor and the Nissan CA16DE. |

All our BP engines were un-leaded mate. I think the BP22 cam was fitted in our 140bhp 1.8GT 323 before 1991. |

these are the 2 true relevant threads I've found in the NA performance BG section... http://www.club323f.com/club323f/forum/ ... hp?t=19583 http://www.club323f.com/club323f/forum/ ... hp?t=17715 very good info, except I'm looking for more specifics so that I can add that information into the FAQ the "pre-cat" BP is the leaded fuel version... back in ye olden days, you guys had leaded petrol use of leaded petrol in a catted car would mean it will clog it up and/or ruin it
anyone know of the valve timing specs of them? lift? if someone here has access to the UK/Europe service manual, it will be in there under the technical data sections... otherwise it will be in the training manual |

The pre-cat BG was unleaded. No UK 89 onwards Mazda ran on leaded fuel. Whether they had a cat or not.
I do believe someone here has the service manual, or the big yellow book as its also known..... |

ok, symantecs... regardless, that engine and ECU was tuned to run on leaded fuel... the same engine was sold on the LHD versions on the continent during that time where those countries were still using leaded fuel

really so the BP22 cams, Pistons (9.8:1) and ECU are for Leaded fuel only interesting ...me thinks AV Gas for the current N/A build It explains alot,, No 02 sensors, No Cat, different idle controll etc In NZ we had one other car that came fitted with the 1.8 BP22 engine, that was the Ford laser TX3 ..not sure what year thou!! guessing 1989+ i dont no when Unleaded fuel was stopped in NZ |

No.
They might be suitable or tuned for leaded fuel in other countries, I don't know, but UK spec BG's were never ran on leaded fuel. According to the handbook that came with my BG GT, which was a pre-cat, it was to be run on unleaded only, as leaded fuel could cause damage to the engine. I had no cat and no O2 sensor. |

the owner's manual is wrong, like many instances I've found in other years of the "323" if the car has no cat, no O2 sensor, running the BP22 cams, high compression pistons, and uses the BP22 ECU, then IT IS tuned to run on leaded fuel it doesn't say so in the UK parts catalogue, but looking at the LHD european one does indicate that it is for leaded fuel there's no reason not to run an EFI engine without an O2 sensor except for when using leaded petrol... the reason being is the lead will plug up the sensor and render it useless... the cat isn't there either because the lead will screw it up! when running an engine designed for leaded petrol with unleaded, you should be using the highest octane available because lead in the fuel originally is meant to be an "easy" octane booster and also helps "cushions" engine internals |

So it could have been run on leaded fuel without making any adjustments whatsoever? Surely the ignition timing would need adjusting?
I used to run my BG on super unleaded, which is 97ron. |

necroing this thread again... I really want to know more about this engine! Anyone manage to get the real Mazda shop manual or have access to one (bribe the dealer)? A mere photocopy of the technical data pages is sufficient! |

Hello, here you is an article about differences about different versions of BP engines: http://www.clubprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?55020-SOHC-103hp-vs-DOHC-128hp-vs-DOHC-137hp-differences Originally it was written by me, translated from polish to english by l3mur91. Camshafts research was done by jackkpl |

Don't you have anything more intelligent to write? If you say that this thread is dead you might as well say that this whole forum is dead. At least this subforum. It was 4th or 5th topic from the top. |

i had a bp22 engine in my 323 bg 3 door. it was a pre cat version so it had no lambda sensor and was meant for un-leaded fuel. i know this because it was plastered all over the car! lol. inside the fuel cap it said unleaded only and also in the owners manual. i still have the air flow meter, ecu and cams if anyones interested. hope this helps |

as i now have another one of these engines i have done a lot of research involving speaking with Mazda directly. they have confirmed that going by the chassis number (BG137) the seven in the start defines fuel type which is LEADED fuel. Because of the robust design of the engine it can easily handle unleaded fuel. the lead in the fuel in other cars used to look after the valve guides and seats but due to Mazda being awesome they already used toughened guides and seats. i have also read that the exhintake cam swap does not work using BP05 and a BP22 Cam. you need to use two BP06 cams from a slightly later mx5 or 323. although the standard cams in the BP22 engine are better than BP06 x2 cam swap. there is a more even pull in torque over the rev range. i have a spare set of BP22 cams in stock if anyone is interested. Thanks for reading Si |
