how do you unscrew these things ?
when i tryed to twist mine off the whole thing span * havent touched it since* would really liek to change it as mine is old and worn,

Didn't someone find that they're spot welded on? You might have to grind it off. If you're mildly mechanically minded, I have a spare standard shifter without a knob on if you want to swap the whole shifter unit? It'll only take you 20 minutes.

I think theres a wee screw under the black rubber ring around the knob

I have just buffed up my drab looking gearknob simply using some Brasso Wadding

cost me under £3 ! just a minimal bit of elbow grease and i could now shave using this

good cheap tip for cleaning, also no need to unscrew if too awkward just rub it whilst sitting comfortably in the car with the radio on
