They do the panel replacement filters and oil filters - what are moaning about

:D

Pedro,

Have a look here: (Anyone with a 323F V6 thinking about entering your details? - I've already enquired about a filter for the 323F V6 on behalf of the club :D).

No, the resonator box is completely bypassed (it'll be removed (again) next time I take the bumper off). The pipe tucks into a handy slot in the plastic engine undertray. The open end of it then faces forwards under the car and ducts cold air to the engine bay. As you can see, I have a bit work to do to make it more efficient. It will be routed via an intake in the front bumper (bigger than one I already have).

I've been looking at tuning the intake tract (or runner length) and there is a definate correlation between the length and performance. So I won't be re-connecting the blue end to the filter.

From what I understand, it's the whole length, from inlet valve to the end of the inlet path (after the filter) - which makes sense if you know anything about transmission line theory and wavelengths (Tom - you should have an apreciation of this) - there's probably other fields that have similar concepts related to them.

I've got to look a bit further into it as there's some issues I want clarify.

My car spent a day and a half in the hands of the K&N development department and their new 1200BHP per axle rolling road in Warrington this week. Their purpose was to develope a 57i induction kit for the 1.8 BA.

I had to re-install the OEM intake system (remove front bumper etc, re-install resonator box and pipe etc - thanks to Shaggy for the help) so that they could compare the standard system with their open air filter and their enclosed Apollo Universal 'kit'.

Here are the results:

Standard intake vs 57i kit (BHP at the wheels)

K&N were good enough to leave the Apollo kit in for me (FOC :D ):

The guy at K&N and I were dicussing the effects of changing the lengths of the intake tract on performance. I'm sure this is to do with pulse tuning and standing waves set up by the valves opening and closing, similar to the exhaust pulse tuning theories. He said they sometimes put resonance chamers in to compensate for the change in length that some of their kits add - similar to those that the '94-'96 BA's have as standard. With this in mind I'm experimenting with the Apollo 'unsealed':

Image

I'll be moving the of the direct cold air feed pipe to a position whereby it duct air towards the end of the filter but not actually attach to it. The other end will be placed in the front bumper similar to my old set-up. I have theories that I'm experimenting with (mwahhahaha  ). Doing this also avoids 'issues' assiciated with driving through deep puddles. :D

This shows where K&N terminated the DCAF pipe (it's also a known method within the 323F comunity):

It's still poo, but Pedros' right, 115 is at the flywheel. I have engine issues, but the graphs still show the effect.

I'm Famous - or rather, my engine is (I wish I'd cleaned it before I took my car to K&N!). I have, in my living room, I beleive, the very first Mazda 1.8L BA K&N 57i indution kit :D - and my engine bay features in the many pictures within the fitting instructions!

Any K&N supplier should be able to get it (the one I have was given to me for a club event by K&N. Model number on the box is: 57-0630 but the 1.8 or the stock number aren't on the K&N web site. I'll email K&N and find out more. Expect the price to between £70 and £110.

They look like this: The filter part, not the plastic thing on the left)

The K&N induction kit for the 1.8L is now listed on the K&N web site:

is the apollo a direct replacement or do you need to get some sort of collar to fit it to the intake?

i'm also thinking of getting the normal k&n induction kit as well -so with the apollo and the other kit i should have all the piping and everything else i need right?

or am i missing something? (i usually do - hehe)

The 57i kit is designed for the 1.8 BA, the Apollo is a universal fit. I don't know what comes with the Apollo kit, but I'd assume, between the 57i and Apollo kits, you'd have everything you need.

For the apollo (at least on the 2.0) you'll just need a connector but I can't remember the size so I'll have a look tomorrow. Or just measure the size of the 1.8 intake (where it meets the airbox) and I'll let you know which connector you'll need.

Not quite sure why you would want to buy both kits? Planning a twin turbo conversion? ;)

i meant completely - as in, all the mods i want at the mo - but it's still just above 1k at the mo

But i have almost a £5k budget (but that is car - insurance - mods)

Then after a little while i'll do all the other stuff i want - new exhaust - lowered and a front mod. - probably do this on a monthly basis

Ok, still waiting for the pics, I need them to make point to my friend who says that there's no performance increase with those type of airfilters...

Thnx
