squeaky alternator belt change.guide in reply - keep

hi folks,the old alternator belt is now squeaking so its time for a change, i can feel ridges on the belt with my hand so change change change!!!

i erm can't remember the name of the belt next to it but i reckon its worth changin as well,had a look for a guide but i cannot find one,if you can pop one my way it'd be great and any advice would be erm.......much needed :roll:

belts are 10 quid each at halfords,so i'm not paying a garage to fit them!!

any pitfalls too avoid?

I think the one on the left is the power steering belt???? Correct me if i am wrong.

I got a pal to change mine as it looked like a pain in the a**e job, and it was.

They way he did it is aligned the first pulley nearest the front of the car next to the power steering pump, Undid 3 bolts and loosened the first belt where the pretensioner is then took it off. Then he loosened the second belt, (how i dont know) then used a breaker bar and hammer to move the adjustor as it was seized then removed the second belt and swapped them over. It looked like a total a**e of a job and i am glad i didnt tackle it myself. However there are masses of people on here more experienced than myself which could tell you how to do this better and easier.

You still needing alloys pal? I still have my old set if you are wanting em.

It's easy peasy mate , here's how (on a 1.5):

You need to jack the car up first.

Steven, with the power steering belt, all 3 bolts must be loosen first as if you miss one (specially the bolt marked A on the guide) you'll think the tensioner is seized. Using a hammer might bent the tensioner :shock:

i thought it'd be kind of easy.....say 6/10..........these diagrams are a good help (i'm a 1.5)

You need to be under the car to measure the tension on the alternator belt and also for easy acces (and more leverage) to some of the bolts.
