Post subject:  engine revs dropping off

I have only had my mazda 1.5 gxi a week but i have noticed if i have been driving at speed on a motorway etc when i come to a stop the revs die right down to the point where i think it is going to stall. It never stalls but it is really annoying me.

Is there anything i can do to stop it doing this. is it worth me turning up the idle speed or clean filters etc?

Any ideas would be really appreciated

My 1.5 does exactly the same..... normally drops to just under 500 rmp then just as I think its gonna stall jumps back up to about 750 rpm... no idea why :?

mine too, i posted this earlier and someone told me it may be a dirty air filter but ive changed my air filter to a jetex induction kit and it still does the same thing. me was thinking battery???

its a bit annoying though isn't it on an otherwise good car. i was thinking of taking it to a mazda garage and seeing if they know of any recalls that were done because of this problem

check also the fuelfilter. It might be that when you are driving on higway with high speed the fuel is needed much more. The fulepump gives then more pressure and somehow manages to deliver the fuel. When You stop the fuelpump does not work so fast and fuel cant get through...

Maybe I am talking nonsense, but worth trying. I had similar problem (along with others) and the fuelfilter was VERY dirty.

I've had similar problems in my old saab, check the vacuum lines for leaks, this will probably be the problem. It's possible that one has fallen off completely, or developed a crack. The engine tries to adjust for the change in revs when you back off the throttle, but the increase in air admitted into the system can fool the ECU.

Have you checked your base idle? short out TEN and GND terminals in the diagnostice connector then observe what happens to the idle speed, adjust if required with the air screw on the throttle body. It could also be a faulty clutch switch. Not 100% sure if the car has a clutch swith though, you'd have to check :D

Post subject:  engine revs

:D i had the same trouble with my car but it would cut out straigth after i started it first thing in the morning, but would be all right after a mile or two but revs would be surging up and dropping off no matter how many miles i travelled, after a lot of time & head scratching we changed the Lambda sensor & cleaned the air flow meter, now the revs are stable & she starts first time no trouble but i fear it was mostly the air flow meter which will eventually have to be changed. Hope this has been some help to you.

yeh mine does the same, tis coz ur engine gets warm and can idle lower.

I could be talkin crap, though as i understand it its the computer that selects the best revs for tick over. U will notice in genral it will tick over higher when its cold due to auto choke n what not n it doesn't need that when its warm, so the computer idles it lower, then if the computer sense the revs falling too low, it corrects itself. Like i say i could be full of rubbish but thats how i have always understood it.

I don't actually know of any possible fix for it, i not even sure if u can adjust the idle, as it is all to do with the computer.

Someone correct me if i am wrong.

I had a problem with my idle revs running very low like that too. Eventually it would never settle, and the rev counter just kept bouncing at idle. The Mazda garage sorted it for me though... No problems anymore now :)

i had a problem with a 121 about a year ago where it did stall after high speeds. turned out that the air intake sensor was knackered and required replaceing, a common fault on fiestas and the 121 (fiesta style). however, it wasnt til it got so bad that everytime i pressed the clutch the car stalled i had it changed, however, my 1.5 does the same as urs n i aint bothered about it yet cos it hasnt stalled. when it does, ill get annoyed n tek it to the mechanics.

I had a simular problem; revs drop to 4 or 500 when I stop then it picks up to 750. I found that wiggling the electrical connecter to the air flow meter fixes it !!! Might be a dodgy/corroded connector or something ???
