I have a 96 V6 323 which needs a power steering pump and I'm struggling to find one.

Has anyone got any ideas where I might source one from.

I've done the usual search on eBay and local scrap yards but hen's teeth, etc are more readily available.

I am not sure if any pump will work/fit from any 323f/323ba.

Hi!

You may be in luck. I have a couple of spare pumps from a 1998 V6, so assuming there is no pre-Ford/post-Ford difference, you are welcome to see if one or other of them work for you.

You will specifically need a V6 pump, it's very different to the 1.5/1.8 pump (I have a 1.5 GXi as well, so I've "been there, done that" with pump comparisons!)

I had to refit the power steering on my V6 (it had been removed before I bought the car). Refit took a long time (it was a saga, see my maintenance thread!!), and I thought there was a problem with the pump, but now I think it was probably just a huge airlock. In the end, to make sure I knew all the power steering system parts were working, I took the entire PAS system from a club scrapper that had died for different reasons; that worked fine after I got rid of the airlock, so I still have the original pump from mine, plus the spare from a donor vehicle. I believe they should work - it would be unusual if both had failed, as the second one had also come off a working donor car - but I can't guarantee it. I'd be happy to send you one just for the cost of postage.

However: what is wrong with your pump? I took the covers off my two to service/repair them, but found there were few moving parts, mostly just a lot of magnets and the pump blade/vane. It didn't look like anything was damaged or broken on either of them.

Refitting the pump is a faff, and very messy, have you done it before, or do you have a garage who can fit it for you? I've had the PAS system on and off my V6 about 6 times, seriously, while I was trying to figure out what was going on, so I can probably answer any questions you have about it!

Ah, I did wonder if you might have a spare or two.

I've actually sourced a couple and am waiting for them to arrive. I did get one but my mate who fettles the car told me it wouldn't fit.

Mine is leaking slightly and also has an issue with the join between the ally casting and the metal parts which isn't a surprise really. I'm at his mercy with stuff like this, hence the search for another pump.

I've been following your fun and games with the PAS on your V6 and was very pleased you got it sorted.

Why did you buy it? I'll tell you why I got mine, it was just for the noise it makes when you 'wring it's neck'.

It has only let me down twice, once the radiator went on the A1 at midnight, and the other was one of the head gaskets failed. It has had a 'little' bit of bodywork done, costing a few quid ;) ;) Oh, and the rear suspension mounts failed, well, one totally, plus a couple of wings, and a door skin, but apart from that, it's been a great car. It doesn't do many miles due to fuel costs but hey ho, and I really enjoy driving it.

I will post some photos of it, one day.

On the pumps, I'll bear you in mind and see what I get through the post later this month.

Did you see my quest for trailing arms? We fitted straight ones from the four pot models. I've not pushed it much so hope all is ok, and they don't rub on the tyres.

Cheers.

W. F.

Hi
I always enjoy reading about the maintenance of the V6s .....
"one of the head gaskets" :( :o
Thank goodness mine is a 1500. I'd love a v6 for the noise and smoothness, but maybe the maintenance would defeat me. I have great respect for the persistence shown by all the v6 owners on here!

Hope the PAS fitting goes well - as you say Serena has done the work (several times) and given us all a great heads-up on the job. I struggled to extract my scrapper 1.5 power steering - and that was with the engine out! It does seem the V6 has the aura - at car shows one of the first questions is often 'is it the V6?', and no amount of 'but it drives great and is really easy to look after' can overcome their disappointment

And I only bought it for the noise of makes, and that is a serious comment.

One day a guy spotted me while driving it and asked if it was for sale. Nope but he was amazed when I told him what it was.

One the pas pumps, one arrived and the car is booked into my pals garage next week. Here's hoping it fits.
