naa it isnt, which is why the garages charge alot of money for doing it, coz u gotta pretty much have the engine out, lot of labour involved. Plus u got the added complication of gettin the timing set back up again, coz if u f*** that up you got real problems. Arty |

I fixed my cambelt timing on Monday morning. Didn't have to remove the engine, but it wasn't far off ... However, if I had wanted to replace the cambelt, I wouldn't have had to go that much further - I think removing the aircon belt, the aircon belt pulley on the crank and the last piece of cambelt cover would have done the trick. As it was, I was busy for a little over 3 hours, working by myself, and having to pop inside every now and then to fetch fresh beer and make sure the kid wasn't destroying the place ... Here's how I supported the motor while the engine mounting was removed ... More cambelt info on this thread ... hi smotter, just thought about something whilst reading a about timing belt change on a miata: did you short the GND & TEN pins on the diagnostic plug when doing the timing belt adjusment? it seems on the miata, it should be shorted when adjusting the timing belt. I did not do that when redoing the timing on my LXI. what do you think? cheers gj |

No no no no no - shorting the GND & TEN is for setting the ignition timing - the ECU adjusts the ignition timing, which makes it difficult to set - as you move the distributor to set the timing, the ECU compensates, so you never know exactly where you are. Bear in mind, though, if you move the cam shaft in relation to the crank, the distributor is connected to the camshaft, so you will have to reset the ignition timing if you move the camshaft ...
