Strange Wheel Bearing Sound

Hi,

My car has developed a very worrying dodgy wheel bearing sound, except it doesn't appear to be coming from any of the wheels? The car runs fine, engine, gearbox, clutch and steering are all behaving normally. The sound seems to be coming from under the car, could it be the diff bearings?? Has anyone else had similar noises and found a fix - it could be a wheel bearing but the sound doesn't appear to change with load and is at its worst at about 30 mph - not dependant on engine revs. Any thoughts appreciated

What sort of sound? (knocking, rattling, scraping, squeeling etc)

Is it constant? Does it worsen on bumpy roads?

best bet is to take it to a local garage and get em to check it out .... I just had a front wheel bearing replaced on mine, from inside the car was very difficult to tell where it was coming from, and I tested the wheels and they were not grinding.. but the garage said yup noisy wheel bearing anbd fitted new one, noise has gone now

Wheel bearing noise is kind of droning noise. If it get worse when cornering, prob one of the front bearings. You can normally tell which wheel it is by jacking up the car at each corner and seeing if there's any play in the wheels when you try give them a good old shake

Thanks guys, took it to local garage this morning - diagnosed rear wheel bearing. From reading the other posts thats the nice expensive Mazda only part?

you can try local Motor factors but think its a Mazda Job - or local scrappy and find a one with low miles ...

i have kinda similar sounds - like metal scrapping sound but only when revving high in 1st or 2nd gear?!

I was quoted £50 +vat new for on of these , Is that cheep (local M factors not Mazda) Have been told you can't just change the rear bearing you have to do the whole hub ???? Very new to mazda.

That is extremely pricey. It shouldnt be the whole hub, because the hub and bearings are seperate. Unless its a mazda speciality thing lol

Smotter may have a diagram to show us if we ask nicely.

Sorry - my Haynes manual also says you are supposed to replace the whole hub (on the rear) ...

It definately the case on the V6 anyway, not sure about the ones with drums on the rear. Had the caliper and disc off today, looks like replacing the hub shouldn't be too difficult. I'm having a nightmare with the handbrake mechanism though, just keeps coming out of adjustment - anyone had a similar problem? It's done it for the last two years! Passenger side works fine, drivers side has been set up at every service and MOT I've had done on it!

Wai's car seems to be suffering from the hand brake un-adjusting it's self I think. New caliper I reckon
