Its an infrared based remote (assuming you've got a Mazda factory fitted system, not a cobra or other aftermarket system).

Up by your sunroof controls you should have a black dome sensor looking type thing. That is what you need to point the remote at, it was a common ish thing it seems for cars around this age that came with factory remote locking.

If you've got an aftermarket alarm, all of which (well, all I know of) use RF based signals, it could just be the batteries are low in the fob.

ive got a factory fitted system , changed batteries but made no difference. maybe just a common problem then , the only reason why i ask is ive always had a car which you can be a fair few feet away and locking system still works ...

Yeah, my aftermarket SA30 will lock/unlock/open boot when I'm in my living room, a good 15-20 meters away and through walls

Have you got the black shiney dome thing up by the sunroof controls then? If so, its just unfortunately limited by its own design :( My nan's Honda is the same, and her friend was convinced she didn't need to point the fob in the window until she proved it

Same technology that your TV remote uses, has to have a line of sight.

Honestly have no idea how or where the factory system links in. On cars without it, the locking is controlled with a big green relay looking like thing behind the passenger kick plate. I imagine that the factory system has something else in that location that works in a similar way. Or, it might be a separate unit hiding somewhere else that links to it.
