To all with smoking exhausts.

Theres been a few threads recently about smoke coming from exhausts, mostly white smoke, or smoke on start up etc...

Water is a by-product of combustion. Put your hand over your tailpipe, it'll be damp after 5 seconds or so.
When warm air (eg-from your exhaust) meets cold air or a cold surface (your exhaust cooling down) it cools down and condenses (turns into water). This water will sit in your exhaust, coating the inner walls of your pipes and silencers until next time you run the car, then the collected water will heat up again, causing it to evaporate and exit the exhaust as steam.
Coupled with the cold mornings this warm steam will be further enhanced as it collides with the cold air after leaving the exhaust. Similar to your breath on a cold day. The colder it is, the more steam you'll get.

If you have a cylinder head gasket problem, and your burning coolant you will notice it. Your car will be running like shit, and your exhaust will be BELCHING white smoke. Your coolant bottle may also be smelling of exhaust fumes.

If you have blue smoke, then this is an oil burning problem.
On start up, when changing gear or on over-run, it could be your valve stem oil seals, oil seeps through them and down the valves into the combustion chambers, then burns with the fuel/air mixture.
If the piston rings are knackered, then the engine will smoke blue when you plant your foot down.

Black sooty smoke usually means rich running, too much fuel in the air/fuel mixture.

If your car is on fire, then theres a good chance this will cause smoking too. You should definately notice this, and its usually coupled with extreme heat and some swearing!!! :wink:

Good idea for a thread though, it's getting a little boring reading the same thing time and time again.

Incidentally, I've noticed my mouth smoking when it's cold outside... is this normal?

That's 8 for the inlet and 8 for the exhaust (For 1.5 and 1.8 engines).
Be warned as they look exactly the same and its not hard to swap them around.
if I remember correctly the only difference are the exhaust ones have tougher material or something on them than the inlet ones.

i always thought smoke was caused by worn out exhaust bearings.............

you can fix it by fitting cross drilled brakelines and high octane headlight fluid...................

You're not correct. Go to your place!

You can use compressed air or nylon rope down the spark plug hole to hold the valve up while you change the stem seals.

Much easier doing it with the head off but not as much hassle as removing the head.

think my prob is solved now....was some water under the exhaust after i got mum to start it and take a look(she said its the most healthy engine smoke shes ever seen, i'm guessing she means its condensation then lol)

the water didn't smell either
