Pretty sure it all drained out. Now i'm getting 2 cm's or so above the full line. Is that dangerous?

Yeah I was. What is the best way to check it, after having driven a short while, and then letting the engine cool off for 5-10 mins or?

Yeah, leave it long enough for the oil to settle again, 5 minutes should be plenty.

Sometimes it can be tricky to read on the dipstick, I've had cars where oil seems to sit on it, and they show the same level no matter what's in the engine...need to check both sides of the stick too, one side might be correct, while the other might drag oil from the tube it sits in and give a false reading.

hello , i have a mazda 323f bg 1.6. 16v from 93 , i bought the car at 177.000 km and the previous owner already had a 10w40 castrol oil in the trunk so i went with it and i used the exact same oil , now i'm getting close to 187.000 km and the engine consumed a little bit of oil , i would actually say a tiny bit , maybe 100-200ml or so

what oil do u guys recommend to use now?

Castrol 10w40 should be fine, I use either GTX or Magnatec, whatever is on offer.
The main thing is to change the oil, rather than not change it :o
and...
I use a main dealer filter, i.e. not a cheapo copy. I think that's important.

P.S. There's a separate oil change thread running on here somewhere ...
.
