Hi, recently when pulling off in first gear there is a shaking / juddering that happens. Increase revs and it seems to help a little. It's worse when turning. Seems to do it periodically.
I have read a few posts on clutch judder, bad clutch or pressure plate, DMF or engine mount.....even spark plugs and leads...what is it?!

Has anyone had a similar issue and know what it is or could be?

Checked with Andywayman and clutch was in a good state when he had it out.

I can't remember in the BJ but I think there one at the front near the radiator, one off the garbox below the battery carrier and one on the left hand side of the block as you look at it. One in the front by the radiator will be your main culprit I think.....our corolla has the same problem :/

Ok thanks for quick reply will check that and revert back! Will it do much harm until fixed if it is the mount?

by the way I am a Cov lad but live outskirts of Donny ;)

engine mounts are soft in the sport, you can feel a lot of movement in the gearstick as you accelerate and decelerate. You have a rear engine mount, which is a pig to get to, the front one at the bottom is the easiest to get to and change, and will help to stop that movement.

I would hazard a guess at the clutch itself though, it is quite common on these. If it's worse on turning it might be worth checking driveshafts and cv joints too.

Greeeaaat timing for this post, as I'm having a similar-sounding problem in Sundance (BA) and was about to post something myself! So, am interested to see possible issues/resolution :)

I don't want to hijack Zorganator's thread(!) but summary of my issues, in case we're in the same boat: clutch & gearbox replaced with nearly-new versions last year. Fine for a long while, then briefly a squeak in the clutch pedal (now gone); then juddering started when going into first - I had to do gear changes really slowly to avoid it. Now I'm getting an occasional grating sound when the clutch is depressed. Only in first, or occasionally in reverse. Car runs fine otherwise.

If it is an engine mount, are you meaning something's loose, or that a bolt/mount needs replacing? The engine was out last year for the gearbox change. And to second Zorganator's question: will something like that do any harm before it's fixed?

Cheers

S

Hijack away SerenaJ lol issues sound similar apart from slow gear changes and grating sound. The key thing is to identify the issue and rectify.
Marc S is right on clutch issues as there are multiple threads where owners have a new clutch but DMF or pressure plate causes similar symptoms.
Engine mount at front I checked earlier today and it looks in bad condition tbh will see if I can post some pics up and get it checked out. Will see if I can check others.

Is there a guide to changing the front engine mount? Is it easy to do?

Thanks for everyone's help/advice

Front engine mount is very easy, you will probably need a decent sized bar to crack the nuts off, but you can get to them easily enough :)

crunching going into gear can only mean gearbox problems - synchro failed maybe, or release bearing???

It's not crunching; the previous box was, and it was increasingly jumping out of gear, but there's none of that with this one, it goes in and out of gear smoothly. It had been juddering when going into first (or rather, moving off in first, as it always juddered at the point where I put the accelerator down and took the clutch off), which has now morphed into an intermittent scraping or groaning sound while the clutch is depressed when going into first. But it is intermittent: today I did a 200 mile trip, and it only happened a couple of times. It's more frequent when reversing, but no issues on any other gear.
